Standing in John Fremont's steps, one can see why the legendary explorer called this area a place of "sudden and violent contrast," and aptly named its heights and depths Winter Ridge and Summer Lake, respectively.
You can hike up to Winter Ridge for the same view (or drive there) by heading to Oregon's Outback Scenic Highway (#31) approximately 100 miles south of Bend. Fremont's expedition - of 25 men, 104 horses and mules, and a 223-pound cannon - not required. Just bring your camera.Link to map.
If you make your basecamp at The Lodge at Summer Lake, you'll find maps and helpful directions from their staff. From their website: "Imagine gaining enough height to have a birds' eye view of the world! For those who desire a stiff walk, it is possible to hike to Winter Ridge right from the back of the Lodge; however, the rim is just a short driving distance away.
"Drive a few miles further and you arrive at the former USFS lookout at Fremont Point. From here you also have grand views of the basin below, including more of the lake. Take time to eat a Scenery at Summer Lakepicnic lunch, packed for you by the folks at the Lodge. Remember to bring your camera and binoculars so you can take memories of the vista home with you! You'll find yourself returning again and again to feel the seasonal changes in the breezes that blow up at you from the valley below.
"Other lookout points offer exciting panoramas as you do a driving tour through the Fremont National Forest, including breathtaking views of the Sycan Marsh. Ask Gary to point the way on one of his maps, and enjoy your trip!"
