Reflections on Tamolitch Pool

Any photo of Tamolitch Pool is attention-grabbing, but trust me: this is a spot you must see in person. Amid all the fantastic sights along the McKenzie River Trail, Tamolitch Pool (a.k.a. the Blue Pool) is the one that seems truly magical. It’s nearly impossible not to stop for a while to take in the blue, to try and find the source of the water, and to debate how best to hike down to the pool for a closer look.

The River-Ocean Connection

This past weekend we had the lucky opportunity to walk the beach at Camp Rilea, just north of Seaside. This hard-packed stretch of sand, flat and smooth as far as one could see (through the typical mist and fog) is rarely open to the general public. Camp Rilea is a working National Guard base, and normally it is open only to veterans for RV camping.
